Christmas Newsletter cover design: The process & understanding.
I’m honoured to be asked to design this year’s Christmas newsletter for the Assumption Church. This year’s Christmas issue is all about the word of God. I was told that many church goers do not read their bible and this is one area that they need me to reflect on the cover design. I too was in need to know the word of God before I can start my process.
John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
This word points out to us a peculiar and puts a difference between this Word, which is the Son of God, and the laws of God, which are also called the word of God.

Here we see the Word is God and God is Jesus. Now lets move on to
John 1:4-5
In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
Jesus is the light for men, the life for men. The life that Christ bestows enlightens men. He is the Light of the World as also the light of men; the fountain of wisdom, holiness, and happiness, to man in his original state.
To put them into a very simple message for this Christmas issue:
Light reveals. Word describes.
Christmas Newsletter cover design: The execution.
The initial execution is to have the cover in black paper. The word Jesus will be made out of tiny holes / dots which can be archived by laser die-cutting method. If the newsletter is lying flat on the table, you see nothing but a piece of black newsletter cover. However, it you lift the cover up and look under the light - it’ll reveals, the word “Jesus”.
But due to the cost of laser die-cutting, the cover is now printed with 100% black, and the word “Jesus” is printed with 95% black on a relative thin paper 100gsm or so. We’ll see beable to achive the similar result when one looks under the light.
